MATHEW JONSON (Canada)
Few Canadian electronic artists can claim the level of success that has met Victoria native Mathew Jonson. Jonson began releasing techno records in 2001 on the British Columbia-based Isitwhatitis imprint, before moving on to his first international releases on the esteemed Perlon label.
His reputation picked up further steam with the release of the “Typerope” single in 2003, and with 2004’s “Decompression EP ”, released on Richie Hawtin ’s M_nus imprint, Jonson scored one of the biggest and best-selling international hits of his career. That year, he founded his own label, Wagon Repair , on which he has released much of his seminal catalogue since. The label has also become home to a significant contingent of Canadian talent, among them past and current MUTEK performers The Mole, Cobblestone Jazz (which features Jonson), Modern Deep Left Quartet (which features The Mole and the members of Cobblestone Jazz), Hrdvision, Mike Shannon, and Deadbeat , among others.
This year Jonson performs at MUTEK in two capacities: once in a live pairing with Chilean expat Dandy Jack , and again with Modern Deep Left Quartet.
DANDY JACK (Chile)
Dandy Jack is the nom de plume of Martin Schopf , the Chilean expatriate living in Geneva who has established a track record as a musical chameleon with a formidable track record for first-rate collaborations. Coming of age during the pivotal late 80s/early 90s development of the German rave scene, Schopf’s first recording adventures were with another MUTEK_10 performer, Tobias Freund , as a member of the trio Sieg Über Die Sonne . That trio coined through the years as a sporadic project, but soon after its inception the restless Schopf began to test his talents at various other solo and collaborative projects, among them ambient undertakings like Amp and Silent Music, Ric Y Martin with Ricardo Villalobos, Junction SM with Sonja Moonear , and numerous others.
This year, MUTEK veterans Dandy Jack and Mathew Jonson make official the live pairing they’ve been cultivating in the shadows for the past few years. Individually, both producers unquestionably rank amongst the most compelling stage personas in live techno, and so one can only imagine that together they will blow down the house.
