[North American Debut] Stefan Betke (Pole) is known worldwide for his minimalist, digitalist re-configuration of Jamaican dub. His music results from the combination of a certain nostalgic tendency for the roots of classic dub, and the rich possibilities of digital production and its inevitable proliferation of errors—whose methodical application (as in the work of Oval, for instance, or Pantytec) has revolutionized the palette of sounds available to minimal techno. Pole wrung from dub his own personal poetics, whose center is the laptop computer, resulting in an endless stream of minuscule sounds generated by the vagaries of digital reproduction. With a work cemented in the minimal aesthetic—which attained enormous visibility and influence at the turn of the century—Pole continues evolving and exploring other worlds and peripheral rhythms, as in his recent incursions into hip-hop. With one foot in that genre, the sound that Pole produces today results in something substantially more organic, percussive, and indeed funky—while amplifying the dimensions of his music by virtue of his various collaborators. Always in motion, and despite the influence of his first recordings, Pole resists being pinned down thanks to his tireless exploration of the possibilities of sound and silence borne by the steady pulse of today's diverse urban musics.
