Musicians, sound artists and producers, Porto Porto! is making electronic music on its own terms, melding styles and genres; with bass-heavy beats and lush melodies woven together into their own brand of experimental avant-house. Alex from California on the Bionic Harp, Quan from Vietnam on his custom-designed modular synths, Samito from Mozambique on the keys and vocals, and the Boogieman, the Montréal-local and mastermind behind the group, on beats, bass lines and sound design. Their live set promises to be a Montréal-seasoned melting-pot of real-time sampling, bass heavy beats, and experimental analog dance music.

California-born and Montréal-based, Alex Tibbitts is The Bionic Harpist. Departing from her classical training, she brings new forms of gestural and digital augmentation of the harp to her sound art. Through real-time sound processing, she joins her instrument in a symbiotic dance, a metaphorical image made even more relevant by the fact that half her body contains metal. The Bionic Harpist made her international debut at MUTEK Montréal’s 2020 hybrid edition at the Société des arts technologiques, as part of an artist in residency at Québec City’s Avatar Center in collaboration with MUTEK Festival.

Perhaps better known as Montreal's Breakglass Studios' co-owner and mixing engineer, James Benjamin has worked on albums and singles by Kaytranada, Purity Ring, Mozart’s Sister, CFCF and Pelada. Since 2019, Benjamin has produced and played under the Boogieman moniker, playing live on n10.as in Montreal, Rinse FM in Paris, at 24rpm Festival in London, and The Lot Radio in New York City. His debut album, Rotations (2019), blends analog experiments, sparkly melodies, and up-tempo acoustic rhythms. His duo Boogieman and Samito, released a debut single called Wasa Bibi (2020), and shortly thereafter premiered their live set with a performance as part of MUTEK Montreal edition 21.

Quan’s expertise designing and operating modular synthesizers delivers a musical palette that jumps between uplifting experimental soundscapes, minimal techno, and deep house. A prominent figure in the development of Vietnam’s experimental electronic music scene, the spontaneous revisions to his live, ever-evolving improvised performances provide an endlessly varied alternative to traditional loop-structured song formats.

Mozambique-born Samito made his mark as a Montreal-based singer and producer with an assembly of influences from his homeland origins to his curiosity of processed bass sounds found in electronic music. His first hit Tiku La Hina (2016), on Costume Records led him to performances internationally, including at SXSW, Osheaga, and Montreal International Jazz Festival. More electronic inspiration appears in singles such as I Saw You (2017) on Man Recordings, where effect-laden vocals sung in different languages are a testimony to Samito’s own multi-faceted musical world.

Porto Porto! is presented as part of Stream On, a project by MUTEK, with the support of the Canada Council for the Arts. #BringingTheArtsToLife
