The COVID-19 pandemic has widely disrupted, and in some cases eliminated, traditional ways of doing business around the world. The music industry, with its live activities and touring sector decimated due to health and safety concerns, is no exception. While this has left many artists and music professionals without jobs or a stable income, it has also accelerated a wave of experimentation with new technologies unseen in previous years; after all, for many artists, technology and the internet are the only tools they have to reach and engage with their fans today.

In addition, the combination of the COVID-19 pandemic and the resurgence of the global Black Lives Matter movement has led to a systemic reckoning with many of the music industry's biggest flaws when it comes to cultural innovation—from the majority-white boards and C-suites at major music companies, to pay inequities across gender and racial lines, to an over-concentration of job opportunities in just a handful of cities.

In this keynote, Cherie Hu will provide a high-level overview of the silver linings that might emerge from these dual crises. These include the rapid development of specific technologies like livestreaming, mixed reality and community apps, and more concrete commitments around diversity, inclusion, accessibility, and reparations within music organizations. And, of course, the work the music industry will have to put in to make sure the silver linings are here to stay.
