Panarchae is a generative audiovisual piece that shifts through time. The term “panarchy” is used to describe evolving hierarchical systems with multiple interrelated elements. Comprised of four reactive audio-visual agents, Panarchae’s synaesthetic entities (panarchaea) represent the Platonic tripartite – popularized by Freud as id, ego, and superego – plus a fourth schism, emergent in our digital age: the fractured, fragmented online self. Adhering to semi-deterministic contours yet evolving organically within them, each moment is generated anew while exploring the distortion of ego perpetuated by digital mediation.
Participants are encouraged to interact during the livestreams (24.08 & 31.08.2021) with the piece by simply tweeting the title Panarchae accompanied by any other text. With a delay of up to 60 seconds, new tweets including the term Panarchae will induce a new audio-visual reaction from the online component within the piece, while displaying the username of the interacting Twitter account. While tweet content is not displayed, it can produce different outcomes. Participants may tweet as many times as they wish, but repeated tweets with identical text content will be ignored.
