Kaifeng-born, Vancouver-based Yu Su is a composer, DJ, and sound artist. Growing up learning classical piano, Yu Su is a multi-instrumentalist who draws on a collection of moods and genres that shape her microcosm of blissful electronic music. Fusing ambient, dub, and left-field house, Yu Su’s sound is influenced by the landscapes that surround her in the Pacific Northwest. From DC’s People’s Potential Unlimited to Amsterdam’s Music From Memory, the variety of labels that have housed her productions speak to her capacity for musical depth. Her debut album, Yellow River Blue (2021), nods to China’s Yellow River and was released after a 2019 tour of her homeland, which fostered a strong feeling of connection to electronic communities there. In this Q&A moderated by creative producer Sarah Mackenzie, Yu Su sits down to discuss launching a new label and her commitment to connecting Chinese and Western audiences.
