Chris Salter^US/QC

Chris Salter is an artist, full professor of computation arts at Concordia University in Montreal and Co-Director of the Hexagram network for Research-Creation in Media Arts and Technology. He completed his PhD in directing/dramatic criticism at Stanford University where he also researched and studied at CCMRA. Early in his career he also collaborated with Peter Sellars and William Forsythe/Frankfurt Ballet. Living and working in both Montreal and Berlin, Salter’s work explores the borders between the senses, art, design and new technologies through large-scale installations as well as books, critical writings and lectures on the international scene. His immersive and physically experiential works are informed by theater, architecture, visual art, computer music, perceptual psychology, cultural theory and engineering and are developed in collaboration with anthropologists, historians, philosophers, engineers, artists and designers. His work has been seen all over the world at such venues as the Venice Architecture Biennale, Barbican Centre, LLUM BCN, MUTEK, Wiener Festwochen, Berliner Festspiele, Muffathalle, Vitra Design Museum, Chronus Art Center Shanghai, HAU-Berlin, BIAN 2014 (Montreal), LABoral, Lille 3000, CTM Berlin, National Art Museum of China, Ars Electronica, Villette Numerique, Todays Art, EXIT Festival, among many others. He is the author of Entangled: Technology and the Transformation of Performance (MIT Press, 2010) and Alien Agency: Experimental Encounters with Art in the Making (MIT Press, 2015). He worked as Creative Consultant for the Barbican Centre’s 2019 season Life Rewired. His new book Sensing Machines on machine and human sensing will appear from MIT Press in 2022.
