Bergsonist is the alias of Moroccan-born, New York-based artist and composer Selwa Abd, whose work spans sound, video, and design research. With an intuitive approach rooted in minimalism, musique concrète, and electroacoustic traditions, she explores the intersections of technology, fragmented identity, and speculative futures.
Raised between post-colonial urban landscapes and the digital frontier, Bergsonist draws influence from philosophy, particularly Deleuze’s reading of Bergson, embracing intuition as a mode of investigation. Her live performances weave manipulated sonic fragments with acoustic textures, creating immersive terrains that blur the boundaries between reality and virtuality.
Alongside acclaimed solo releases on labels like Optimo Music and Tresor Records, her compositions have featured in contemporary art exhibitions at MOMA PS1, Roulette, and National Sawdust. Her 2024 album Maghreb was named one of NPR’s Best Albums of the Year.
