Beyond a threatening aura and an often veiled presentation, El Ángel Exterminador, the project of audiovisual artist Max Ammo, honours the surreal vision of the film the project is titled after, following the fever dream approach to the transmutation of sociopolitical and inner tensions into audiovisual pieces. Blending their previous sonic explorations as “Goo” with analogue hardware and a new foray into DAWs, Ammo has developed a sound they dub “thriller-electronics,” re-mystifying electronic music by injecting it with magic, spirituality and chaos.
Having shared stages with artists such as ZUTZUT, Rosa Pistola, and Animistic Beliefs, and performed at festivals like New Forms and venues including the Polygon Gallery (VAN), El Ángel Exterminador’s hybrid performances deliver sharp edges, ethereal undertones, and spectral Latin American influences.
With a focus on cyberfeminism, avatar-body dynamics, actual and virtual spaces, myth, philosophy, and spirituality, visual artist Anastasiia Vorobiova’s practice explores the relationship between human consciousness and the virtual body. Since 2018, she has been deeply engaged in integrating VR technologies into theatrical productions.
The political upheaval in Ukraine in 2014 marked a turning point in Vorobiova’s artistic trajectory, redirecting her practice toward new media and leading to experimental work with sound, video, and digital imagery. Since then, her multimedia installations and performances have been presented internationally at venues and festivals including Mystetskyi Arsenal (Kyiv), Cricoteka and Bunkier Sztuki (Kraków), TRAFO Center for Contemporary Art, and Maxim Gorki Theater (Berlin), and many more. Alongside her artistic work, she lectures on VR and immersive technologies for theatre students at leading cultural institutions.
El Ángel Exterminador & Anastasiia Vorobiova – BRUXISMO
Live A/V | World premiere
In BRUXISMO, El Ángel Exterminador & Anastasiia Vorobiova unfold a visceral seven-part mystic-horror narrative exploring technological encroachment, surveillance, and structural violence inflicting wounds upon the spiritual and psychic realms and becoming incarnations through the body.
Drawing from their Mexican and Ukrainian folk heritages, the piece blends real-time visuals, a hybrid use of digital and analogue techniques, electromagnetic coils and the live processing of both voice and an experimental instrument crafted from bones, teeth, metal and stone to conjure an intuitive vision of a future shaped by collective resistance and liberation.
TW: This performance may contain graphic visuals and sound design simulating blood, gunshots, drones, and bones breaking, as well as the use of strobing and fog.
