Handsome TigerCA

The literal translation of his Arabic name, Handsome Tiger is the moniker of Vancouver-based producer and DJ Hussein Elnamer, a fitting name for an artist who left his indie rock past behind to pounce into the realm of electronic music. Having fronted the indie band A Name Unheard for several years, Elnamer is a vocal appreciator of all things music, and his DJ sets often merge bassy dancefloor vibes with the occasional live guitar.

A staple of the Vancouver and larger West Coast music community, Handsome Tiger played countless shows and gathered numerous releases under his belt. Through his love of bass music, he’s been a stalwart advocate in supporting and contributing to Vancouver’s effervescent underground scene. Quickly becoming a west coast festival scene favorite, with notable appearances at the iconic Bass Coast and Shambhala festivals, he has since shared the stage the likes of EarthGang, Snotty Nose Rez Kids, Ky-Mani Marley, Sister Nancy, DJ MADD, Madam X and Distinct Motive. His DJ sets blend the many flavors of soundsystem culture; bass, grime, afrobeats and hip-hop, expertly woven with indigenous voices, are sure to light up any dancefloor.

Fresh from the release of his DECOLONIZED EP, Handsome Tiger will make his debut on the MUTEK stage at l’esplanade Tranquille by showcasing the Indigenized Bass sound he’s been cultivating for the past two years. No doubt festival-goers will get a preview of his upcoming FIRST PEOPLE LP, due late 2022.
