Holy Tongue is a London-based trio that has carved out a unique space in the experimental dub scene. Formed in 2018 by percussionist Valentina Magaletti and producer Al Wootton (formerly known as Deadboy), the group later expanded with the addition of Japanese bassist and producer Susumu Mukai, also known as Zongamin.
Their music blends psychedelic, free-form, high-energy, and spiritual dub-dance, drawing from the legacy of On-U Sound, the frenetic rhythms of 23 Skidoo, Liquid Liquid, and ESG, as well as the spiritual energy of free jazz. This eclectic fusion is expressed through a critically acclaimed trilogy of EPs and their debut album, Deliverance and Spiritual Warfare, released in 2023. In 2024, Holy Tongue collaborated with electronic music producer Shackleton on the album The Tumbling Psychic Joy of Now, released via AD 93. This project pushes the boundaries of dub and psychedelia even further, merging Shackleton’s dystopian electronic aesthetic with Holy Tongue’s meditative dub infused with post-punk and jazz.
Holy Tongue’s live performances are known for their hypnotic intensity, often highlighting improvisation and reflecting their deep roots in experimental sound. Their ability to blend genres makes each show a truly immersive and distinctive experience.
