Deeply inhabited by a love of science-fiction, DJ, producer and artist Jeff Mills adopts its stories and aesthetics into the creative fabric of his divergent minimal techno sound. For him, space is an obsession, and his music sets the stage for dreamed utopias and interstellar ideation to freely sprawl.
Arising from Detroit’s early techno scene, his innovative style embodies the future while respecting the past and remaining well into the present. When he founded his own record label Axis in 1992, Mills took the rotating principle of the solar system as aesthetic and core model for his creativity, crafting a logo consisting of four triangles pointing to an invisible center.
From the beginning, his first releases explored forward-thinking scientific topics like “Mutant theory,” “Tomorrow,” and “Art/UFO”, taking inspiration from classic works like Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey and Fritz Lang’s Metropolis (1927) and Woman in the Moon (1929).
For Jeff Mills, the future is a powerful creative force, and this philosophy is reflected in his ceaseless activity and adventures into the terra incognita of hypothetical worlds.
