Few Canadian electronic artists can claim the level of success that has met West Coast native Mathew Jonson, whose bounteous discography of moody, exquisitely layered compositions runs the rhythmic gamut. Recognized worldwide as one of the country’s premier techno producers, this classically trained percussionist, pianist and jazz drummer began releasing expansive, emotionally exacting records in 2001 on the B.C. based Isitwhatitisimprint – an imprint that made a non negligible dent in the minimalist house movement at the time, and which Jonson bought up in 2012, remastering and rereleasing its entire catalogue digitally. Jonson’s reputation picked up further steam with the 2004 launch of his Wagon Repair label, on which he has since released the bulk of his seminal catalogue, as well as that of a who’s who of Canadian superplayers: The Mole, Cobblestone Jazz (which features Jonson), energetic techno supergroup Modern Deep Left Quartet (which features The Mole and the members of Cobblestone Jazz), Hrdvision and Mike Shannon. This master of meandering melodies and time honoured MUTEK blood brother has kept up the pace with a slew of surprising forays into jazz, house, fusion, and techno. He’s also thrived on spontaneity and thrilling improvisation in live settings, whether with the Modern Deep Left Quartet, Cobblestone Jazz, Midnight Operator (a duo with brother Nathan Jonson, aka Hrdvsion), or through collaborations with artists such as Dandy Jack (MUTEK 2009), Minilogue (MUTEK 2012) and Jesse Heartthrob (as Jonson & Siminski). The festival welcomes back one of its many cherished, Berlin-based progeny for the first time since releasing the Her Blurry Pictures LP (2013) on Crosstown Rebels, and the Northern Lights EP (2015), the latest, futuristic morsel of Cobblestone Jazz candy.
