Matthew Coulombe is a Canadian multidisciplinary artist. He was born in Vancouver in 1999, raised in Montréal and is now based in Munich. As Nixtrove, he creates experimental, electro-flavoured electronic music with Max/MSP currently being at the core of his process after several years of touring with hardware. His explorations of rhythm, sound and synthesis lead to immersive experiences that feel alive, mystical, emotional, machine-like and otherworldly. With a background in audio engineering, drums and visual arts, he gravitates towards building his own tools and systems that evolve over time.
Having a prolific discography with over 30 releases, several remixes and recorded live performances, Nixtrove has accumulated a body of work that one can spend several hours delving into. He has a sensibility for intuitive improvisation as much as he programs his music, allowing unpredictable and spontaneous moments to happen during his sessions. Nixtrove moved to Germany to pursue his path to build his software in Max and to open a horizon to niche electronic music culture happening all over the world.
For his debut MUTEK performance in 2022, Nixtrove paid homage to Acid, Electro, and Glitch through a decidedly deconstructionist approach to rhythm and melody. His compositions were transformed in real time, leaving ample room for improvisation. The live set proved both cerebral and emotional, revealing Nixtrove’s personal insight into dance music.
