Weidi Zhang & Weilu GeCN/US
Weidi Zhang is a new media artist and designer based in Los Angeles and Phoenix. She is a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Immersive Experience Design at the Media and Immersive eXperience (MIX) Center at Arizona State University. Her interdisciplinary research explores a speculative assemblage of artificial memories and language at the intersection of immersive media design, experimental data visualization, and interactive AI art.
Her work has received widespread international recognition, earning distinctions such as the Best in Show Award(s) at ACM SIGGRAPH (2021, 2022), Honorary Mention at Prix Ars Electronica (2022), IF Design Award (2026), the Red Dot Design Award (2022, 2026), Juried Selections at the Japan Media Arts Festival (2020), Lumen Prize Shortlist (2020, 2021), and others.
Weilu Ge is a composer, media artist and undisciplinary scholar based in Cambridge, Massachusetts. She works with various media forms, from concert music, installation, and performance to video and innovative technology. Her works explore theatrical expressions of sonic, visual and spatial media, taking composition as critical means to examine relationships between power, system, body, and technology in a social-cultural context.
Situated at the intersection of music, art, technology, media theory, STS, and speculative design, her research-creation investigates creative and critical applications of listening across disciplines. Her dissertation theorizes performative listening and play as social and tactical media practices that intervene in the dominant mechanisms of surveillance capitalism, psychopolitics, and algorithmic control. She is an active member of IMUU, an artist collective specializing in working with intermedia narratives to create interactive and immersive experiences.

Film
Wayfarer, by Weidi Zhang and Weilu Ge, follows the journeys of a generative being inspired by ancient Chinese cosmology. Using AI to reinterpret ancient mythological forms, the film reflects on the ways we encounter the unknown, imagining new forms of coexistence with intelligent systems and allowing new speculative beings to emerge from collective memory.
This project is co-produced by the Society for Arts and Technology and was supported as part of its residency program.
