Over the past 23 years, MUTEK has gained worldwide recognition as a festival showcasing avant-garde audiovisual performances – works that innovate to create a new language of sound and image. MUTEK's latest project, the Immersive Collection, inaugurates a new chapter for the organization, marking its first steps as a producer of extended reality (XR) content.

Five artists took on the challenge of reinventing a past festival performance into an XR artwork. The result is an eclectic but coherent set of three projects, ranging from contemplative to surreal to dynamic: Entanglement XR by France Jobin & Markus Heckmann, House of Moiré by Chloe Alexandra Thompson & Matthew Edwards (aesthetic.stalemate), and Immortelle by Line Katcho.

The Immersive Collection had its world premiere at the MUTEK Festival at the esplande Tranquille.

The virtual platform presented a selection of new digital art works, past festival performances, stimulating discussions from MUTEK Forum, and sound archives from the past decade.

MUTEK's third virtual exhibition was presented on virtual.mutek.org from August 9 to September 9. This 2022 edition brought together a selection of games and videos, created by 12 Quebecois, Canadian, and foreign artists, that are interactive, immersive, or make use of artificial intelligence. In addition, a series of podcasts, past performances, and a residency program presented by Amplify D.A.I. were also available.

STATES OF EXISTENCES

The artists in this exhibition did not see themselves represented in the virtual environments at their disposal. They therefore sought to fill this void by populating these spaces with their own images, representations of augmented versions of themselves and personal stories, playing with notions of hybridization and the boundary between the real and the artificial.
