Matt & Mark ThibideauCA
Driven by a shared obsession with hardware, fraternal twins Matt & Mark Thibideau started making music in a basement in Wallaceburg in the late ’80s. Armed with a scrappy mix of pawnshop finds and classified synths, they began shaping a sound that would become their signature: dubby, minimal techno with grit, space, and their sense of curiosity baked in.
Now based in Toronto, Matt and Mark have worked on a combination of solo records and duo projects, signing with international labels, including Joule Imprint, Cynosure, Vade Mecum, and Berg Audio. Their passion for analog recording equipment led to the 2000 project “Repair”, which began as an ode to the old, broken synthesizers in their studio, as well as the 2011 launch of their own label, Obsolete Components, through which they put defunct equipment into the spotlight.
While Matt and Mark are now established names in the Toronto electronic scene, their music first made its leap overseas in 2001 following the release of “V-wreck” with label Substatic. Most formative among their body of work is a recent record for label Sushitech, featuring legendary dub artist Tikiman, one of dance music’s most influential frontmen.
As pillars of Canada’s electronic music scene, Matt and Mark Thibideau have played at some of the most internationally recognized clubs and festivals in the world, performing in major Canadian cities and across Europe’s music hubs, from Bucharest to Berlin.
