MeasureCA
Active since 2020, Sergei Kofman, known better by the name Measure, chases the music at the tip of the tongue and the back of the head.
Working in a wide range of media: film and commercial scoring, music for dance and theatre, creative technology projects, solo music, and collaborative music production, he pushes the limits of sound design, wrapping it in a parcel of lush harmonies and thorough storytelling, seeking out sounds that are familiar, but never quite within reach.
While studying at the University of Toronto, he was awarded the 2021 Ann H. Atkinson prize for his piece Voices in the Whir, for Disklavier, string quartet, and electronics. The piece was recorded by the Odin Quartet and premiered in 2021 at the U of T New Music Festival. His music has been performed by ensembles around Canada and the United States, and he has shared the bill with artists such as Kelly Moran and Karen Ng.
His debut album, Artefacts, arrived this year on Toronto's experimental electronic label Halocline Trance.
Measure - Digital Autonomy
Live | World premiere
How much autonomy does a performer have in an augmented system? Digital Autonomy is Measure’s investigation into this concept. Using piano, synthesizers, and contact microphones, he explores the tension and contradictions that occur when organic sounds undergo digital transformation, introducing an unpredictability that draws out spectre-like forms.
