The Fear RatioUK
The Fear Ratio is the collaborative project of James Ruskin and Mark Broom, two longstanding heavyweights of the UK techno scene. Formed in 2011 as an outlet to explore their shared passion for electronica, hip-hop, and dub-infused beats, the duo set out to create music beyond the strict parameters of 4/4 techno. Their sound fuses abstract synths, heavy basslines, and experimental textures, drawing from IDM, ambient, and broken rhythms. Their acclaimed debut album Lightbox laid the foundation for their evolving style, followed by a deep collaboration with the cult Manchester label Skam on releases like Refuge of a Twisted Soul and They Can’t Be Saved. A Live EP in 2018, featuring recordings from their performance supporting Autechre, captured their improvisational approach to sound and structure. Now several albums in, including Slinky on Tresor, The Fear Ratio continue to carve out their own distinctive territory — a space where the energy of the club dissolves into intricate, atmospheric sonic landscapes.
