Formed in South Africa in 2019 by artist Francois Knoetze and performer/writer Amy Louise Wilson, the Lo-Def Film Factory is a participatory community cinema initiative that employs an experimental praxis that emphasizes co-creation and mistake-making. The collective aims to create a space for storytelling through the democratization of filmmaking via video by and for underrepresented communities across Southern Africa. Initially the Lo-Def Film Factory took the form of a DIY pop-up film studio that was open to the Bloemfontein public. Since then, the collective has run workshops and worked with various Cape Town communities, placing value on the transmission of ideas and lived experience over high production values.

The Subterranean Imprint Archive is a co-created 6DoF VR experience that seeks to situate the viewer in a counter-archive, which traces the legacy of technopolitics in Central and Southern Africa. Drawing on research surrounding nuclearity in Africa from the Atomic Age to the present, it transports the visitor from the immaterial data bank of the cloud down into digital infrastructures embedded in the soil, to unearth the contested histories of collaborative discovery and uneven distribution.
