MUTEK Montréal arrives in Rome this week to present the Québec Showcase program at Videocittà, Italy’s festival dedicated to digital visions and audiovisual culture, taking place from July 3 to 6, 2025.

Since its launch in 2018, Videocittà has turned Rome into a vibrant stage for forward-thinking audiovisual art, welcoming more than 550 artists and attracting over 470,000 attendees across seven editions. From the city’s historic squares to converted industrial spaces, the festival has become a standout event for discovering bold audiovisual works that fuse art, technology, and live performance.

This year, MUTEK brings three distinctive performances by Québec artists whose bold approaches and inventive soundscapes highlight the province’s vibrant electronic and digital art scenes:

July 3: Myriam Bleau & Nien Tzu Weng – Second Self

Two Montreal-based interdisciplinary artists, Myriam Bleau and Nien Tzu Weng present Second Self, an intense and hypnotic audiovisual ritual where wearable LED displays become living extensions of the body, generating evolving sounds and visuals in real time. Their performance destabilizes perceptions of identity, weaving mythological references with cybernetic choreography to create a luminous, unsettling dance that questions where the human ends and the machine begins.

July 4: SEULEMENT

The solo project of musician and audiovisual artist Mathieu Arsenault, based in Tiohtià:ke/Montréal, SEULEMENT explores the fragility of the human body in the age of artificial intelligence. Through a charged blend of voice, gesture, and digital textures, Arsenault crafts a space where vulnerability meets technological alienation, evoking both intimacy and unease. His performance extends the universe he’s built across experimental albums and art films, each probing the porous boundary between organic and synthetic worlds.

July 5: MESOCOSM – TERRA FLECTA

Formed in 2021 by sound artists Joël Lavoie and Philippe Vandal with visual artist Emma Forgues, the collective MESOCOSM presents TERRA FLECTA, an immersive piece merging soundscapes, visuals, and ecological research. Their performance conjures a sensorial ecosystem, offering a poetic yet critical reflection on our relationship with the environment. Balancing science and imagination, Flecta Earth envelops audiences in shifting audiovisual landscapes where every vibration and flicker feels alive with meaning.

In addition to performances and exhibitions, Videocittà also offers Agorà – The international B2B platform of Videocittà – which brings together leading creatives, studios, institutions, and cultural professionals for two days of curated one-to-one meetings, inspirational talks, and high-level networking opportunities.

As part of this platform, Sarah Mackenzie, Director of MUTEK Forum and Creative Development, will join a round table titled Inspirations from the World Session alongside Nadine Ghaffar from Art D'Egypte, Suzanne Ball from CODAworx, Agatha Thomas from Diversion Cinema, Indranjan Banerjee from Art Jameel, and Natasha Greenhalgh from NXT Museum.

Thanks to the support of the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec, this collaboration with Videocittà fosters cultural exchange and supports the international reach of creative talent dedicated to digital art and electronic music from Québec.
