PHI celebrates MUTEK's 25th anniversary with an exclusive listening experience in Habitat Sonore, a place that promotes total immersion in the sound world of artists from here and elsewhere. Enjoy a unique experience featuring artists who explore spatialized mixing. Three programs are available for a limited time.
Habitat Sonore is an intimate listening space designed to accommodate up to 10 people. This small capacity enhances total immersion into the sound world of artists from here and elsewhere. The experience unfolds in near darkness, which helps to emphasize the sound. We invite you to settle in comfortably, let your mind wander, close your eyes if you wish, and be carried away by a unique and captivating auditory journey.
Program 1: Jonathan Kawchuk et Zoë Mc Pherson
Everywhen by Jonathan Kawchuk
Everywhen, the new album by Canadian recorder, composer, and singer Jonathan Kawchuk, features only three sounds: the human voice, the sine tones of a synthesizer, and the Rocky Mountains near Kananaskis, Alberta. Meticulously recorded in Dolby Atmos, this project is the result of six years of direct relationships with the trees, rocks, streams, grasses, grizzlies, birds, rabbits, moose, and all other living things in these vast and humble mountains.
It is a work that is harsh, anxious, tactile, and celestial, based on collages of found sounds and voices, breath, wind, and space. It is both deeply unsettling and supremely soothing. It is inspired by and carries the philosophies of athletics, transcendental black metal, and the indifferent amorality of nature.
Holding by Zoë Mc Pherson
This work, conceived in May 2021 in Berlin during lockdown, is based on the recording of the rhythm of two pedestrian crossing signals. These signals, slightly out of sync, emit their tic-tac independently, just as each individual has their own rhythm and life pattern.
"During this time, our days were almost like parallel lines, making it so that we rarely crossed paths in real life. Yet, I felt like I was you and you were me. I dreamed of sharing common questions, relearning together, and making plans for a better future."
Strongly inspired by the Black Lives Matter movement and transformative justice practices, this text encapsulates Zoë Mc Pherson's reflections on society, intimacy, and gender. While the world is collectively and individually "on hold," it is also undergoing profound transformations.
Program 2: Sofie Birch et Ela Minus
Lolupupi Kutiku by Sofie Birch
Lolupupi Kutiku is a landscape of invisible forests, crackling plants, fluid melodies, and intertwined flowers that lull you into a mysterious and silky trance.
One wonders: “Who are you? Where are you going? What lies ahead if you listen?” The work combines nature recordings, synthesizers, and therapeutic sound instruments distributed through the speakers of Habitat Sonore, creating a contemplative space that embodies the busy spirit.
The Sound and The Fury by Ela Minus
Ela Minus's intention when mixing with Marta Salogni in Dolby Atmos was to preserve the integrity of the music while adding a physicality to the mix. The idea was not to get lost in the technology, but to use it to illuminate the soul of what she had created. To use it to place the listener inside. To light up new sonic corners, allowing the music to become a richer, more habitable space where the listener can feel comfortably settled. With care and intention.
Program 3: Flabbergast
Consolation In Constellation by Flabbergast
Formed from an unexpected collaboration for a MUTEK_rec project, Flabbergast has significantly evolved since its inception. Comprised of Guillaume Coutu Dumont and Vincent Lemieux, this duo has transitioned from spontaneous live improvisations to more focused compositions and an increased presence in recorded music since 2014. Drawing from a wide range of influences, including electronic music, jazz, hip-hop, and contemporary sounds, Flabbergast refuses to be confined to a single genre. The diverse expertise of both members allows them to explore and integrate a variety of musical styles into their work, making each piece both unique and coherent. In addition to a steady stream of releases on various record labels, Flabbergast launched their own label, Copier/Coller, in 2023.
