Over two decades as a producer and collaborator in Belgium’s underground electronic music scene, Laurent Baudoux has upended club music tropes and merged genres as a solo artist and in star-studded collaborations, his distinctive house sound standing out for how pleasurable his experiments can be.
Since his first releases as Scratch Pet Land with his brother Nicolas, releasing attention-getting idiosyncratic tracks of inventive pop-electro noise on the Source and Sonig labels, Baudoux has fit in nicely with producers and musicians who don’t quite fit in – from Jan St. Werner and Jo Zimmermann a.k.a. Schlammpeitziger to MC Illreme and Ali Durt Morimotoe. He’s used vintage synths and laptops, noisemaking toys, guitars and turntables and all manner of percussion to create club music with his genre defying, kaleidoscopic stamp on it.
Under the moniker Lawrence Le Doux for the past few years, he’s made structured music that happily gurgles along, loose in tone yet precise in technique – as with the hand printed releases on Vlek, it has a unique, handmade quality to it. His Terrestre EP became an instant favourite for its chill house beats and gently warbling instrumentation, accented by fleshed out 8-bit-like bleeps and bloops. His most recent release, the Pollution EP, repeats warm melodic mantras, each reverb-rich note bending into the next while a high hat beat subtly shifts the pace. On stage, he’s been known to add guitar and bass to his live electronics, integrating a performative element to already eminently listenable music.
Lawrence Le Doux is a 2016 participant of the SHAPE platform for innovative music and audiovisual art, which is supported by the Creative Europe program of the European Union.
