Kaiwa is a new encounter between Nicola Cruz and machìna, created for MUTEK Montréal 2025. Born from a dialogue between two distinct artistic voices, the project merges Cruz’s approach to analogue electronics with machìna’s modular textures and crystalline vocals. Bringing together Cruz’s grooves and machìna’s jazz-tinged improvisations, Kaiwa explores the spaces between tradition and experimentation. Cruz, raised in Ecuador and renowned for programming latin rhythms into analog synths, finds a striking counterpoint in machìna’s refined sonic craftsmanship, shaped by classical vocal training and a love for jazz and techno. In this debut performance, Kaiwa unfolds as a dynamic conversation—improvised yet intentional—where rhythm, voice, and synthesis interact in real time. With live hardware at its core, the duo builds immersive musical experiences that invite both movement and contemplation. This unique collaboration channels each artist’s individual journey while forging a new shared language. Premiering at MUTEK Montréal, Kaiwa invites audiences into an evolving dialogue, where the only constant is transformation.
